Where I Once Stood

By Teev Handal
The ground beneath my feet
Was once hallowed
A place of striding giants
Jefferson, Hancock, Franklin, Payne
The raw elements
Of the bedrock below
For more than two centuries
An evolving example
Of peace and power
With shores that welcomed
The humble, wretched, huddled masses
Who seek only to belong
But pride precedes fall
As a flash of insurrection
Brought low what was special
Blood corrupting the land
To bring us off the mount
To join the league of ordinary nations
